Following their victory on leg four, Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) and Paulo Fiuza (POR) repeated their success in the MINI John Cooper Works Rally on the route to Riyadh. Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz (both ESP), who were victorious on days three and five, finished runner-up today. After tomorrow’s rest day, the Spanish pair will go into week two of the Dakar as the overall leaders. Peterhansel and Fiuza are currently third, behind Nasser Al-Attiyah in a Toyota.

A further two MINI John Cooper Works crews finished in the top ten: Orlando “Orly” Terranova and Bernardo “Ronnie” Graue crossed the finish line in ninth place, followed by Yasir Seaidan (KSA) and Alexey Kuzmich (RUS). The two cars are currently fifth and ninth in the overall standings.

Alexander Dorosinskiy (RUS) and Oleg Uperenko (LVA) came home 16th in the MINI ALL4 Racing. The Lithuanian pair of Vaidotas Zala and Saulius Jurgelenas finished 18th in their MINI JCW Rally. The MINI JCW Rally crew of Denis Krotov (RUS) and Dmytro Tsyro (UKR) ended the stage in 22nd place. All three teams are currently in the top 20 in the overall standings.

Peterhansel was the third car onto stage six, but soon took the lead. He then battled it out for the stage win with his team-mate Sainz. “I am delighted that we won today,” said a beaming Peterhansel at the finish. “That was a very long leg with fast and slow sections in the dunes. At such high speeds, you really have to concentrate. That is very tiring mentally. The rest day has come at exactly the right time.”

Although Sainz and Cruz had to open the stage, the majority of which ran through a sandy area, the duo was able to maintain its position among the leading group. Second place, ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah in a Toyota, saw them extend their overall lead over the Qatari. “To start as the first into the stage was not easy. As such, I am all the happier to have finished in this position,” the Spaniard explained. “There were a number of fast sections today, even in the dunes and sometimes on sandy routes. With a distance of over 450 kilometres, you come across a bit of everything and Lucas did a very good job. I am now looking forward to the rest day.”

Jakub “Kuba” Przygonski (POL) and Timo Gottschalk (GER) were forced to stop with a technical issue. They finished 44th.

The competitors will spend tomorrow’s rest day in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Dakar Rally – Result SS6*

1. S.
